Flight Of The Conchords Season 2 DVD Review: The Difficult Second Album

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS SEASON 2 DVD: On general release Monday 3rd August 2009

If you saw the first series of this New Zealand/New York musical show then you were probably excited for the second series.

However, if you saw the second series then you were probably a bit disappointed.

I wouldn’t like to call to Conchords a one hit wonder, but there was a certain magic about the first season; the cheapness/rubishness of it, the offbeat humour and catchy comedy folk songs. But Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement don’t seem to have been able to replicate that magic.

Bret and Jermaine continue their musical misadventures in New York with their hapless manager, Murray and their one psychotic fan, Mel. Murray and Mel get much more involved in the show this time around which fleshes out what could otherwise be a bit of a flat show.

Although series 1 is far superior, series 2 is a lot of fun. The songs aren’t as good as the first series but there are some real gems with ‘Sugarlumps’ and ‘Dreams’ standing out. We also get to see Mel and Murray getting in on the song action and a couple of nice little cameos from Kristin Wiig (Ghost Town) , Lucy Lawless (Xena) and John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as himself.

As far as plot goes… there isn’t one. It’s kind of a Seinfeld type of ‘show about nothing’. This worked like a charm the first time around but there’s nothing new about the second series. The production quality has improved but I doubt any of the fans were crying out for shiny new sets and slightly better graphics.

The extras are nothing special to be honest, a documentary, deleted scenes, outtakes and some mock commercials.
